I got started in wedding planning when I picked up and moved to Hawaii specifically to enroll in UH’s Travel Industry Management program. It was while attending school there when I found a job posting for a ‘day-of coordinator assistant’ with an already existing planning company on Oahu. The owner and I totally hit it off and I was hired. From there, I have never looked back! Upon moving back home to the Seattle area, New Creations was born in November of 2009.
The favorite part of my job is when people ‘get it.’ Obviously when couples hire a planner, they know that I will take some stress off their shoulders, however, when it comes to the day of the wedding and they actually see how much work I take off of them and their friends and family, they have that ‘ah-ha’ moment of, ‘Oh thank goodness we hired you!!!’ That is the best knowing that they have gotten to actually enjoy the day and remember it, having the greatest party of their lives and knowing all the details are handled. I love it!
3. Are you seeing any new trends this year?
This year has not really proved to have any new trends for my couples, however, I am noticing that my Brides and Grooms are more ok with going bold. They are not afraid to incorporate what they really love whether that be in the venue, color palette, dessert they pick, or with the little touches. That is what makes a wedding truly special is when your guests know you better after they leave the wedding than when they arrived. Not being afraid to incorporate your style and personalities into the day makes it truly memorable and special.
4. What are some of your most memorable clients or events? What made them memorable?
The couples that stick out to me the most are clients that I get to do full-design and planning for (vs ‘day-of’). I get to work with them so closely on the details- the look, the feel and making it personal. These are aspects that I notice often lack in a couple that does everything on their own. While DIY weddings can be beautiful, there is just something about a well executed event using a professionals eye and help with finding vendors that can make the details come to life (and on budget) to pull together a seamless day. I love working so closely with full-planning clients and getting to know their families and being welcomed into their homes. Nothing like feeling appreciated and loved right off the bat!
5. Do you have any tips to help couples when trying to find a planner for their special day?
Don’t base your decision on hiring a planner just based off of cost! Planning is a very intimate process and it is imperative that you and your fiancé get along with whomever you end up hiring. This person is the only person with you from start to finish not only in the planning process, but on the wedding day as well. Someone that costs a bit more may have more years of experience, a wider network of available vendors willing to give them discounts, able to handle stressful situations better, and the list goes on. Sure, interview a lot of planners to find out who your perfect fit is, but if you fall in love with one that is a bit more expensive than the other, you need to follow your gut and hire the planner you love. It will pay for itself many times over and you will be SO happy with your decision.
